How You Can 'Seize the Awkward'

When someone you’re close to is struggling, as their friend, you’re often the first to notice and also uniquely positioned to reach out and offer support. Created in partnership with JED, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Ad Council, Seize the Awkward provides warning signs that a friend is struggling, conversation starters, tips for support, and resources to get help.

The Counseling Center is located on the top floor of Cooley Hall, which is in between Racey Residential Hall and the Allen Dining Hall.

Services are provided year-round Monday through Friday, 9:00am until 5:00pm. An on call registered nurse is available 24 hours/day. She can be reached at 540-327-4511

In the case of an emergency, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), a national 24-hour toll-free suicide prevention and intervention telephone resource that provides immediate assistance to individuals in suicidal crisis by connecting them to the nearest available suicide prevention and mental health service provider.
