I Don't Have Health Insurance But I Need Medication

I no longer have health insurance, but I need to be on medicine (I was on Prozac). Is there any help I can get that is either free or low cost?

Victor Schwartz, M.D., Medical Director, The Jed Foundation answers:

Does the doctor giving prescribing the medication know about your situation? She or he should be able to help you out with this.

There are several things you might do. Depending on your financial situation you may be eligible for Medicaid in your state. Also, a number of drug companies have programs though which they will provide medication at very reduced costs to people in financial need. Again, your doctor may be able to help direct you to this. Finally, again, if you are in tough financial circumstances, many public or city hospital based clinics have very knowledgeable social workers who can help you get the resources you need to continue your medication.
